SheRides Green Stages: empowering women and greening Malindi
18.12.2025

In December 2025, MOGO in Kenya, with the support of Eleving Group, brought together women, community partners, and local institutions in Malindi for an initiative that combined financial empowerment with meaningful environmental action. The SheRides Green Stages project was designed to strengthen women’s financial skills while contributing to long-term environmental conservation in the community.
More than thirty women took part in a financial literacy workshop that introduced them to the essentials of budgeting, personal financial management, and the role loans can play when used as well-planned investments. For many participants, the session provided a clearer understanding of how to navigate financial decisions with confidence and how to pursue new opportunities in a sector where women are increasingly taking part.
Shortly after the workshop, the women joined MOGO employees, representatives and riders from MAUMORI, the official body overseeing boda-boda operations in Malindi, along with Abson Motors and the Malindi Municipality, for a community tree-planting activity. Together, they planted eighty trees across Lea Mwana Children’s Home and Malindi High School. The atmosphere throughout the planting was positive and collaborative, with students, riders, caregivers, and neighbors coming together to support the effort.
At Lea Mwana Children’s Home, the group planted fruit trees to create a cooler, more welcoming space while offering the prospect of fresh produce for the children in the future. At Malindi High School, whistling pines were selected for their protective environmental value - they help stabilize soil, reduce coastal wind impact, and strengthen resilience in an area increasingly affected by climate pressures. Once mature, the trees planted through the initiative are expected to absorb roughly 1.3 tonnes of CO₂ per year, forming a small but important contribution to the town’s environmental well-being.
Throughout the day, the connection between financial empowerment and environmental stewardship was evident. The women who had just strengthened their financial knowledge were now directly contributing to greener community spaces, demonstrating how personal growth and collective action can reinforce one another.
The project also highlighted the positive impact of public–private collaboration. MOGO in Kenya, Eleving Group, MAUMORI, Abson Motors, and Malindi Municipality worked closely together to create an initiative that blended community engagement, environmental care, and women’s empowerment in a meaningful and practical way.
SheRides Green Stages left Malindi not only a little greener, but also a little stronger, showing how shared efforts can nurture both the environment and the people who help shape its future.
This initiative aligns with Kenya’s national priorities outlined in the Central Bank of Kenya’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy (2025–2028), which emphasizes digital transformation, financial literacy, and inclusion for underserved groups.
MOGO fully supports this direction. The activities in Malindi demonstrate how community engagement, financial education, and responsible lending contribute to the NFIS goals by expanding access to transparent and affordable credit, particularly for informal and underserved customers.
These efforts underscore MOGO’s broader commitment to advancing Kenya’s financial inclusion agenda through practical, community-driven initiatives that create lasting social and environmental impact.
